Last week, school leaders from across the diocese gathered for annual diocesan SIAMS support days, providing valuable opportunities for training, reflection, discussion and networking. Each school is invited to attend one of five full training days throughout the academic year, carefully tailored to its stage in the SIAMS cycle. Head teachers were encouraged to come with another leader from their school, as well as a parish partner who might be a foundation governor or member of clergy - it was joy to see so many vibrant church school partnerships across our Diocese.
The days offered a comprehensive programme designed to support leaders at every point in their SIAMS journey. Participants explored the SIAMS Inspection Questions (IQs) in depth, building confidence and clarity around how these are evidenced through everyday school life. Sessions were both practical and reflective, encouraging leaders to identify strengths, consider next steps and reflect on priorities within their own contexts.
A particular highlight was hearing from leaders whose schools have recently undergone inspection. They shared honest reflections, practical examples and key learning from their experiences, offering reassurance and encouragement to colleagues preparing for future SIAMS visits. These examples of effective practice helped bring the framework to life and prompted thoughtful discussion throughout the day.
Time was also dedicated to exploring Christian vision more deeply, how it serves each school community, shapes decision-making, and is lived out authentically by both adults and pupils. Feedback from across the sessions has been positive, with leaders especially valuing the opportunity to network with peers, share experiences, and build supportive professional relationships alongside developing their understanding of the SIAMS framework. Our Assistant Diocesan Director of Education Cheryl Govier said, 'Over the last academic year our schools advisers have come up with an innovative way of delivering SIAMS training, the model having been acknowledged nationally. We have been delighted with the uptake, with more schools than ever having connected with our training and support in the last academic year through the SIAMS cycle. It has been wonderful to hear the feedback from schools who have left feeling inspired and challenged to fully live out their church school foundation.'
We are grateful to all the schools that attended and look forward to welcoming leaders again next year.
