Preparing for SIAMS

This section provides guidance on preparing for SIAMS inspections, including advice on how to create or adapt your theologically rooted Christian vision.

Start by reading the SIAMS Framework. It’s the key 15-page document for schools, governors and inspectors, and explains how SIAMS works. After the introduction, it focuses on three questions about your school’s context:
•   Who are we?
•   What are we doing here?
•   How then shall we live and learn together?
The third question is central. Inspectors base their judgements on how well they can answer the six or seven Inspection Questions (IQs) linked to it.
Once you understand the framework, share it with staff and governors. Use meetings to explore the IQs in detail. A good starting point is your theologically rooted Christian vision (IQ1) and whether it enables pupils and adults to flourish. This vision underpins everything the school does.
Your vision should reflect your school’s context and needs, drawing on Christian teaching and the Bible. Work with clergy or the diocese if needed. Review it regularly, as contexts change.
Make sure the vision is shared with the whole school community, including parents and pupils. Many schools express their vision through Christian values, which should also be clearly communicated.
As you explore the other IQs:
•   IQ2 & IQ3: Focus on spiritual development—agree a shared understanding as a school.
•   IQ4: How the vision supports a culture of care and respect.
•   IQ5: How the vision promotes justice, responsibility, dignity and service to others.
•   IQ6: The RE curriculum, linked to the Church of England Statement of Entitlement.
•   IQ7: Applies to VA schools only (teaching and learning of RE). VC schools are only inspected on the RE curriculum (IQ6).
Finally, create a SIAMS Self-Evaluation Form (SEF). While not required, it is strongly recommended. This should outline what the school does and the impact it has, using evidence such as reports, data, and feedback. This helps inspectors clearly see your effectiveness.
SIAMS inspections usually take place every five years, so check your last inspection date and plan from there.
