Faculty and List B permissions

Most works to church buildings, contents, or grounds require approval under Faculty Jurisdiction. Minor works may fall under Lists A & B, which allow for simpler permissions.

Key steps for applications
  1. Use the Church of England Online Faculty System to submit applications.
  2. Petitioners need to register on the Church of England Online Faculty System. This will be sent to the DAC team for approval. Please ensure to select the name of the church. 
  3. For assistance on preparing statements of significance and needs, please use the Church Buildings Council section on the Church of England website.
  4. Check with your local council as to planning permissions before proceeding.

Understanding Faculty and List B permissions

Some changes can be approved under List B, while others need full Faculty approval.

What is List B?

  • Covers minor repairs and like-for-like replacements (e.g., replacing roof tiles, fixing drains, restoring an existing feature).

  • Requires Archdeacons’ approval and initial DAC review.

  • Applied for via the Online Faculty System.

What is a Faculty?
  • Needed for major alterations (e.g., new heating systems, pew removals, structural work).
  • Reviewed by the DAC and decided by the Chancellor.
  • Requires Statements of Significance & Need to justify changes.
