For the past year, pupils from Cameley CEVC Primary School & Nursery in Temple Cloud have been serving tea and cake, as their much-loved Cameley Café marks its first anniversary supporting the Chew Valley community.
Hosted on the first Wednesday of every month at the school, the café has offered a wonderful opportunity for Years 5 and 6 pupils to enhance their communication and hospitality skills. In collaboration with volunteers from St Barnabas Church, the pupils serve teas, coffees and homemade cakes to local residents, fostering a friendly and inviting community space.
Reflecting on their experiences at the café, Xia one of the pupils who have been helping out at the cafe, said, “You can have fun and communicate with new people.” Another pupil, Lumen added, “I like it because you get to learn about other people and it makes their day, sometimes even their week!”
Deputy Headteacher Clare Gardner, speaking about the initiative said, “A year on, our community café continues to flourish thanks to the wonderful support of St Barnabas Church. The café has equipped our pupils with valuable real-world skills, confidence and a sense of pride. It's more than just a café – it’s a place where young people discover the importance of service and connection. In only one year, it has grown into a welcoming space where everyone feels included.”
The School Café is open on the first Wednesday of each month, from 10:00 to 11:15am.
